The Indianapolis City Hospital Project was a public art project in which 16 well-known Indiana artists came together to create murals that would be hung in the rooms of patients and in wards within the City Hospital. The project was led by William Forsyth, and began in 1914. ==History== At the time of the beginning of the project, the Indianapolis City Hospital was having multiple units added on, courtesy of a donation from a wealthy business man named Alfred Burdsal. The City Hospital began with just a few units spurred on by the fear of Cholera and Smallpox, but the new units were to be known as the Burdsal Units. Previous to a fire in 1909, children in the community were treated at Eleanor Hospital, but after the fire they began to come to the City Hospital. St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild became involved with helping the City Hospital in 1907, and once the Burdsal Units were complete, the Guild continued to help. There was concern with the lack of decoration in the new City Hospital, and St. Margaret’s Guild became involved with financially supporting these innovations. The Guild consulted with Keene, and Keene began talking to Clifton Wheeler and Wayman Adams about the project.〔 They suggested a large-scale mural project. William Forsyth was given a position in the project as the project supervisor. “Many of the artists working in the project were still students, or were not well established and decided to participate in the project, even though they were all paid the wages of a union house painter at the time.”〔 During the project, many of the artists lived in the hospital, and ate the hospital kitchen’s food to subsidize costs. The Guild, the City Board of Health, and many other donors supported this project at the cost of roughly $10,000. “Once the project began, the artists were given free to paint whatever they chose, so long as it complemented the architectural design. When finished, the murals would hang above eye level, so that patients lying in bed could easily see the murals.”〔 The City Hospital project was revealed to the public on November 28, 1914. Currently, only a few of these murals remain at Eskenazi Health. Many of the other murals were lost or damaged during the multiple remodeling projects on the City Hospital/Wishard campus. 〔〔 抄文引用元・出典: フリー百科事典『 ウィキペディア(Wikipedia)』 ■ウィキペディアで「Indianapolis City Hospital Project」の詳細全文を読む スポンサード リンク
